Text John O’Rea Subsidy Roll in 1662
A few years ago, Dennis O'Rear on a visit to Ireland found the O'Rea
name on the 1659 Census of Ireland in the town of Cappamore in
County Limerick. Even then, only the surname was noted.

In 1662, the Subsidy Rolls (essentially equivalent to Tax Rolls) for
County Waterbury and specifically Parish Kilrossanty listed:
John O Rea, yeoman of Cottin
Thomas O Rea, Husbandman of same

John was taxed 13s 8d for a 5 pound valuation and Thomas 8s for a
    valuation of 3 pounds.

I have been unable to find Cottin on the map although it may have
been an estate or farm near the village of Kilrossanty. The village
is located near the center of County Waterford on the plains of
Ireland. Pictures show a very fertile land well-suited for
farming. The village is about 45 miles southwest of Cappamore and
appears to be smaller than Cappamore.

There is no indication as the any relationship between the O'Reas at
Cappamore and those at Kilrossanty. Nor is there any relationship
shown between John and Thomas at Kilrossanty. But, considering their
"titles", John may have been the older of the two since yeoman has a
    slightly higher "rank" than husbandman.

A yeoman was normally a freeman often holding land and possibly even
renting out land or employing others to work the land. The amount of
land may have been around 100 acres. Now, a husbandman was also a
freeman who likely owned a small amount of land although he was
probably not married. Both would have been expected to serve in
military conflict under the local leaders. Given these meanings,
and _assuming_ near ages, John was possibly the older brother of
Thomas and John _may_ have been married.

More research into other Subsidy Rolls, Hearth Rolls, or census
records may tell us if John or Thomas remained in Waterford. We
could conjecture that this John was the one who appeared in Virginia
some 15 years later. And, lacking passenger manifests (which we are
unlikely to find, all we have is conjecture.
